Masterful Strings: Peter Zazofsky, violin

An esteemed violinist and professor of violin and chamber music at Boston University, Peter Zazofsky enjoys a multifaceted career as a soloist and chamber musician. Zazofsky tours and records as the first violinist of the Muir Quartet and is the director of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute String Quartet workshop. In a program that includes the stately Brahms Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, Zazofsky will be joined by School of Music faculty members Rita Sloan, Irina Muresanu, Katherine Murdock and Eric Kutz to showcase his extensive ensemble versatility.

Journeys: UMD Wind Ensemble

Take a musical journey with the UMD Wind Ensemble (UMWE) starting with Roma by Valerie Coleman, founding member of the Grammy Award-winning quintet Imani Winds, and continuing with On the Mountains of Orphalese by DC-based composer Nebal Maysaud. The concert will also pay tribute to beloved composer David Maslanka who died in 2018 with a performance of his composition Traveler.

Bach Cantata Series: BWV 140

J.S. Bach, known as the great master, wrote more than 200 cantatas, and UMD Choral Activities aims to sing them all in this series of short performances by students, faculty, staff and community friends led by conductors in the graduate program. Conducted by Lucas Link, this performance will feature Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, calls the voice to us), BWV 140.

Opera at the Symphony: UMD Repertoire Orchestra

Join the UMD Repertoire Orchestra (UMRO) for some of the greatest hits of the operatic stage, played by symphonic orchestra! The concert will open with the grand, majestic Overture to The Magic Flute, followed by the delightfully fun Czech folk dances from The Bartered Bride. You're sure to recognize the tuneful classics "Habanera" and "Toreador" from Carmen, and perhaps even the seductive "Seguidilla" or the brilliant "Bohemian Dance" that closes the concert!

Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony: UMD Symphony Orchestra

Conductor David Neely makes his debut as the UMD Symphony Orchestra's (UMSO) new music director with Antonín Dvořák's cheerful Symphony No. 8. The concert will also feature Jennifer Higdon's blue cathedral, a cathartic and uplifting work the American composer wrote in memory of her younger brother, and Overture No. 3 from Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera, Leonore, later known as Fidelio.

The Awakening Hour: UMD Wind Orchestra

Led by Michael Votta, Jr., the UMD Wind Orchestra (UMWO) kicks off its season with Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Joseph Schwantner’s The Awakening Hour, Herbert Haufrecht’s Symphony for Brass and Timpani, Michael Weinstein’s Serenade for 12 Instruments and Verne Reynolds’ Scenes Revisited.

Corpora Caelestia: A Movement Opera by Heidi McFall

Corpora Caelestia: A Movement Opera is a music and dance collaborative performance featuring a live organ, voice and movement by an ensemble of women. This sacred and minimalistic piece explores the contrast between the boundaries of the physical body and a freeness of spirit. The breathy, effortful quality of the organ captures a feeling of longing as the soul tries to break free from physical restriction.
