2021-22 NextLOOK Preview: ft. Rochelle Rice, Chao Tian & Joseph Webb

Established in 2014 through a partnership between The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium, NextLOOK supports the development of new music, plays, dance and other experiences by performing artists based in DC, Maryland and Virginia who want to understand how their audience can become a creative partner.

NextLOOK ft. Joseph Webb: Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock

Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock is a performance art exhibition series that honors the liberation and eroticism of love. Through Black vernacular dance and reimagined visuals of historical album covers, this performance art exhibition celebrates the reggae sounds of Gregory Isaacs and culture of the lovers rock era of the 70s and 80s. The cast of Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock takes audience members on an interactive journey of movement prayers of courtship, heartbreak and back to love as the "Hopeless Romantic."

NextLOOK ft. Chao Tian: Unheard Sounds

Unheard Sounds is grounded in an exploration of immigrant artist's self-expression. It prompts cross-disciplinary creativity through improvisation and ensures a voice for the minority as well as an equitable hearing. This project is divided into two parts: monologue and dialogue, which will be represented by a collaboration between Chinese dulcimer virtuoso Chao Tian, dance artist and choreographer Shu-chen Cuff and award-winning world percussionist Tom Teasley.
