TEMPO Concert

A graduate student-led contemporary music ensemble focused on cultivating new music experiences in the community. Presenting music so fresh that the ink is often literally wet on the pages, TEMPO often collaborates with composers to present the music of now. The group has a special emphasis on experiences outside the standard concert hall.

Maryland Gospel Choir Concert

Since its founding in 1975, hundreds of voices have joined together to share joyous music through College Park’s very own gospel choir. The group is committed to encouraging fellowship and community service.

DakhaBrakha

Like the band, the name DakhaBrakha is original, and authentic at the same time. Meaning  “give/take” in old Ukrainian, DakhaBrakha presents fundamental elements of Ukrainian “ethnic chaos,” bending genres with new music influenced by traditions from across the globe. This quartet from Kiev’s  dramatic show is filled with explosive harmonies and thrilling vocal effects. While deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture, the band’s compositions are influenced by sounds from Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditions.

Kurt Weill Festival: Street Scene

The Maryland Opera Studio presents Weill's Street Scene, a work that brilliantly combines elements of opera and musical theater and that is widely acknowledged as one of the composer's masterpieces. Set in a crowded tenement in 1920s New York City, the opera portrays life among a diverse group of working-class immigrants and the climactic events of one sweltering summer day. Based on a story by Elmer Rice with lyrics by Langston Hughes, Street Scene addresses social justice issues, immigration, race and the complexity of human relationships.

Chamber Music Showcase

School of Music student artists perform a moving collection of chamber music repertoire for strings, woodwinds, brass and piano. The culmination of rehearsal and coaching during the spring semester, this concert is an integral part of coursework for UMD School of Music students and provides a glimpse into the training they receive for performing in major ensembles.

Kurt Weill Festival: Zaubernacht & Mahagonny Songspiel

Presenting an opera double bill, the Maryland Opera Studio juxtaposes two of Weill’s earliest works for the stage — Zaubernacht (1922) and Mahagonny Songspiel (1927). Translating to "magic night," Zaubernacht is an enchanting work for solo soprano and chamber orchestra about a magical fairy who brings toys to life, featuring dance students from the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies.

Tomeka Reid Stringtet

Cellist, composer, educator, and UMD School of Music alumna Tomeka Reid is described as "a remarkably versatile player" (Chicago Tribune) for her nimble improvisations with classical cello. Equally adept in classical and jazz contexts, Reid predominantly finds herself in experimental settings and composes for a wide range of instrumentation, from big band to chamber ensemble, that combines groove along with freer concepts. In this performance, Reid presents her Stringtet, combining seven string players with drums in a unique improvisatory ensemble.
