New Work Reading: The Fishwife • Maryland Opera Studio

ABOUT THE EVENT

From traditional arias to jaunty sea Shanties, The Fishwife is an inventive reimagining of the Brothers Grimms’ The Fisherman and His Wife. Composed by Ashi Day and commissioned by the Maryland Opera Studio, this new work expands on the original story in an operatic collage of musical languages and styles.

Gamelan Concert: UMD Balinese Gamelan Saraswati

ABOUT THE EVENT

Under the direction of I Nyoman Suadin, the UMD Balinese Gamelan Saraswati Ensemble presents an evening of traditional Balinese music. The ensemble takes its name from Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge and the arts. The gong kebyar style percussive instruments used by this ensemble were built by I Wayan Beratha, a leading instrument maker, composer, performer and teacher in Bali.

Opera Scene Study: Maryland Opera Studio

First-year Maryland Opera Studio students demonstrate their talent in this showcase featuring scenes from a wide operatic repertory. To keep the focus on beautiful, pure sounds and vivid acting, the performance is accompanied only by piano and minimal props.

Bach Cantata Series: UMD Choral Activities

ABOUT THE EVENT

J.S. Bach, known as the great master, wrote more than 200 cantatas, and UMD Choral Activities aims to sing them all in this series of short performances led by conductors in the graduate program. This performance will feature a cantata and soloists announced closer to the performance.

Korean Drumming Concert: UMD Korean Percussion Ensemble

ABOUT THE EVENT

Experience the vibrant beat of samulnori under the direction of Sebastian Wang. This modern incarnation of traditional Korean folk music celebrates harvest time and provides a lively soundtrack to dancing. The ensemble is comprised of four types of percussion instruments—an hourglass drum, a barrel drum, a small gong and a large gong—each representing a natural element: rain, clouds, lightning and wind, respectively.

Maryland Gospel Choir Concert

ABOUT THE EVENT

Since its founding in 1975, hundreds of voices have joined together to share joyous music through UMD’s very own gospel choir. Committed to encouraging fellowship and community service, this group is composed of gospel music lovers across campus.

Drop in for some light opera in The Clarice's expansive indoor Grand Pavilion. This afternoon audience favorite offers a casual preview of the Maryland Opera Studio’s scene study performances scheduled for the following week.

University & Community Band Concert

ABOUT THE EVENT

Representing a variety of majors across campus, the University Band is joined by the Maryland Community Band for a concert of traditional and contemporary wind band music in a performance perfect for all ages. Repertoire will be announced closer to the concert.
