Their Time Has Come: Music by Women Composers

Throughout the history of classical music, women have struggled to find their voice as performers, conductors and particularly composers. Many women composers are best known for their associations with their husbands or brothers such as Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn and Alma Mahler. Today, we are far closer to reaching gender equity with prolific composers like Jennifer Higdon, Joan Tower, Missy Mazzoli, Libby Larsen, Julia Wolfe, Unsuk Chin and so many more. Still, major American orchestras feature music by women in at most 10% of their seasons and as little as literally none.

This faculty curated honors concert showcases gorgeous tone and vivid emotion.

Chamber music is at the core of the School of Music’s curriculum. The leadership and communication skills essential to its performance, when applied to large ensemble settings, empower musicians and lead to outstanding performances.

UMoves: Undergraduate Dance Concert

These short works span multiple dance styles and are as diverse as the students themselves.

Korean Percussion at Maryland

Experience the vibrant beat of samulnori. This modern incarnation of traditional Korean folk music celebrates harvest time and provides a lively soundtrack to dancing. The ensemble is comprised of four types of percussion instruments—an hourglass drum, a barrel drum, a small gong and a large gong—each representing a natural element: rain, clouds, lightning and wind, respectively.
