New works, as well as breathing new life into music, give young instrumentalists and singers the opportunity to learn from living composers, collaborate with them and gain insight into the compositional process. This concert features original works by UMD student composers, including solo, chamber and electroacoustic performances.

College Park, MD—BASETRACK LIVE, a multimedia performance piece, examines the cost of war at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on November 1 at 8pm. By utilizing a live musical score, film, photographs and text from social media exchanges, BASETRACK LIVE shows how war affects not only service members and veterans but also their families and communities. The title of Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte (“How all women act”) has an eerie resonance in today’s online attacks on women and the ensuing hashtag opposition campaign. Is the opera a man’s indictment of women’s weakness? Or does Mozart use the comedy to strike a blow for gender equality?
