NextLOOK: Afro House Ebon Kojo: The Last Tribe (OFF-SITE)

Residency at Joe's Movement Emporium: December 5-9, 2016

What if a man, struggling against being mechanical, could not accept his son as anything but a machine? Sent from a dying earth, General Ebon Kojo and Ra-7 have been ordered to “recolor” the distant and barren planet Beta-5. Upon their arrival to Beta-5, Ebon and Ra are confronted with unprecedented realities that transform them both.

UMD Repertoire Orchestra Winter Concert

James Stern of the UMD School of Music faculty performs Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1; the program concludes with Dvořák's beloved American-inspired masterwork, the New World Symphony. 

The University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra is a unique all-campus orchestra that is open to music majors, non-music majors and members of the University of Maryland community. Led by graduate conducting students at UMD, the orchestra prides itself on a wide range of projects, collaborations and repertoire.

Pärt - Fratres for Strings and Percussion

UMD Percussion Ensemble Concert

Usually positioned at the back of the orchestra, the percussion section moves center stage to reveal the colorful, melodic potential of their instruments in this striking concert of contemporary music.

Gamelan and Koto Concert

 The complex interlocking rhythms of Balinese music on percussive instruments, the myriad expressions and the delicate motions of Balinese dance unite in the UMD Gamelan Saraswati. The quiet beauty, simplicity and harmonizing effect of Japanese nature are revealed in the music of the UMD Koto Ensemble.

Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah: Stretch Music

Grammy-nominated trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah is a modern musical innovator. A lover of jazz rooted in the conviction that all forms of musical expression have something to offer, he is hailed as the father of Stretch Music, a genre that strives to stretch jazz’s conventions to encompass as many other musical forms, languages and cultures as possible. From his critically acclaimed albums to his epic NPR Tiny Desk Concert, Scott’s trailblazing sounds and compelling presence consistently elicit palpable emotional responses from rapt audiences.
