Sphinx Virtuosi: "Music without Borders — Music unites the world when words fail."

As part of one of the world’s most dynamic chamber orchestras, these 18 professional players are among the nation’s acclaimed Black and Latino professional solo instrumentalists and chamber musicians. Music Without Borders, an electrifying and haunting program, features works by Shostakovich, Cassadó, Emmy Award-nominated Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom and a commission by Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Terence Blanchard.

This multidisciplinary work explores the myriad subtleties of dwelling. What implicit meaning does the word suggest? Internal versus external, shadow against light, our perspective versus what we perceive. Spaces near and far, up and down, seen and unseen.

Faculty Artist Series -- Rita Sloan, piano - Unusual Suspects

This concert features chamber works of unusual configurations: the Mozart Kegelstatt trio and Schubert's Trout Quintet. A master of chamber music, collaborative piano faculty member Rita Sloan is joined by Robert DiLutis, Irina Muresanu, Katherine Murdock, Eric Kutz and Robert Oppelt.

Kurt Weill Festival: The Road of Promise: UMD Symphony Orchestra

The School of Music’s Kurt Weill Festival opens with The Road of Promise. This semi-staged oratorio features the combined forces of the UMD Symphony Orchestra, the Maryland Opera Studio, the UMD Concert Choir and SOM alumni. Adapted from the original 1937 work, The Road of Promise takes the audience through a journey that ends with renewal and hope.

Little Shop of Horrors

Seymour’s just another jerk working down on Skid Row, haplessly pining after his coworker Audrey and keeping his head down. Suddenly, opportunity falls into his lap in the form of a mysterious new plant. A carnivorous, conniving – not to mention singing – new plant that promises to fulfill Seymour’s every wish in exchange for human blood.

This classic sci-fi musical comedy packs a gleefully witty Motown/pop-rock score from the creative team behind Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and more.

Alicia Olatuja, voice

Praised for her “strong and luscious tone” (The New York Times), Alicia Olatuja astonishes audiences with her exquisite vocals, artistic versatility and captivating demeanor. She first came into the national spotlight as the featured soloist with Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. Alicia and her band are in demand, having performed at the Jazz Standard, Vermont Jazz Center, Sioux Falls JazzFest, Rockport Jazz Festival, Markham Jazz Festival, Monty Alexander Jazz Fest and the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, among others.

Tyshawn Sorey Trio

MacArthur Fellow and composer/drummer Tyshawn Sorey is a leading young artist blurring the boundary between composed and improvised music. His efforts to shatter boundaries by weaving classical composition and improvisation are influenced by history’s boldest composers. The  Artist Partner Program brings you the new Speed of Sound Sessions (S.O.S.), a celebration of musicians who support and promote composers whose work was created in the 21st century and who respond to the contemporary world in which we live. The S.O.S.

The Immigrants 1: What is America to You?: UMD Wind Orchestra

A leading voice among collegiate ensembles in premiering new works for winds, the 10th anniversary season of the University of Maryland Wind Orchestra, led by Dr. Michael Votta, will feature faculty soloists, world premiere performances and masterworks of the 20th and 21st centuries. UMWO has performed in side-by-side collaborations with major professional ensembles and has been invited to perform at international, national and regional conferences.

Program includes:

Masterful Strings: Colin Carr, cello

Colin Carr will perform all Six Suites for Solo Cello by J.S. Bach. Written in the 1720’s, these pieces catapulted the cello into the realm of ‘solo’ instrument. Encapsulating in one voice the entire gamut of human emotion, the act of performing them chronologically as one complete work has become the cellist’s Everest — a feat of both artistry and incredible stamina.

Faculty Artist Series: Woodwind Faculty Showcase

School of Music faculty collaborate for an evening of chamber music by Czech composers Pavel Haas, Leoš Janaček, and Bohuslav Martinů. Woodwind faculty Sarah Frisof, Robert DiLutis, Joseph Grimmer, Erich Heckscher, Mark Hill, and Gregory Miller are joined by pianist Rita Sloan and guest alumnus, former Marine Band bass clarinetist Jay Niepoetter.
