TEMPO
This graduate student-led contemporary music ensemble focuses on cultivating new music experiences in the community both within and outside of the standard concert hall. Presenting music so fresh that the ink is often literally wet on the pages, TEMPO collaborates with composers to present the music of now.
Big Band Halloween Scream
Swing into the spirit of Halloween with this audience favorite signature concert! It’s an entertaining evening with screaming saxophones, wailing trumpets and more. Featuring the UMD Jazz Ensemble, UMD Jazz Lab Band and University Jazz Band.
Richard Goode

Acknowledged as one of today’s leading interpreters of Classical and Romantic music, Goode is a frequent recitalist in the world’s musical capitals and with leading orchestras including The Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, among others.

Stew and the Negro Problem: Notes of a Native Song
Tony and Obie Award-winning writer and composer Stew delves into the rich legacy of activist writer James Baldwin in this new music and theater experience alongside long-time collaborator and co-composer Heidi Rodewald and an all-star band. Stew’s uniquely incisive lyrics are wrapped in an irresistible mix of rock, rhythm and blues, and jazz in this powerful homage to the inspiring writer, who famously confronted issues of gender, race, and class distinction with wisdom and fire.
Bernstein and Beyond: UMD Wind Ensemble
Under the leadership of newly appointed Associate Director of Bands Andrea Brown, the University of Maryland Wind Ensemble (UMWE) serves as a training ground for talented young wind players. With a focus on student performers, UMWE presents an exciting season of the best traditional and contemporary wind ensemble literature.

Opera Scene Study
First-year Maryland Opera Studio (MOS) students demonstrate their talent in this showcase featuring duet scenes from a wide operatic repertory. To keep the focus on beautiful, pure sounds and vivid acting, the performance is accompanied only by piano and minimal props.
MOS is dedicated to the future of opera. Preparing the next generation of great singers and offering performances ranging from the classic repertoire to provocative new works, MOS is building audiences and advancing the art that sustains them.
Sean Jones Quartet
Artists Sean Jones (trumpeter/musical director) and Brinae Ali (choreographer/tap dancer/vocalist) have teamed up to create a piece that fuses elements of jazz, tap, hip hop and bebop to articulate the social vernacular of the African American experience.
Outdoor Jazz Showcase
UPDATE: Due to the potential for passing showers this evening, for the comfort of guests and performers, and the safety of instruments and equipment, tonight's Jazz Showcase will be played inside in the Dekelboum Concert Hall.
Unfortunately, this means we must ask you to leave the picnic baskets and blankets at home, as no food or drink is permitted in our indoor venues. The Encore bar in the Grand Pavilion will be open beginning at 4:30PM if you would like to join us for a drink before the concert.
