Gamelan and Koto Ensembles

In this combined concert, two of the School of Music’s world music ensembles share the stage. The Gamelan ensemble offers traditional Balinese music played on the gong kebyar style percussive instruments, showcasing complex  interlocking rhythms, multifaceted expressions and the delicate motions of Balinese dance. The Japanese Koto Ensemble features music played on traditional Japanese 13-string instruments. Known as sōkyoku, koto music reflects the quiet beauty, simplicity and harmonizing effect of Japanese nature.

New Music at Maryland Concert

Cultivating the talent of modern classical composers and bringing new music to the stage inspires musicians and audience members alike. This evening of original compositions by UMD student composers features solo, chamber and electroacoustic performances.

Korean Percussion Ensemble

Experience the vibrant beat of Samulnori. This modern incarnation of traditional Korean folk music celebrates harvest time and provides a lively soundtrack to dancing. The ensemble is comprised of four types of percussion instruments—an hourglass drum, a barrel drum, a small gong and a large gong. Each represents a natural element— wind, rain, clouds and lightning.

Under the direction of Sebastian Wang, the concert is performed by the UMD Korean Percussion Ensemble alongside a small core of professional musicians, exhibiting some of the great Samulnori repertoire. 

Faculty Artist Series: Joseph Grimmer, The Modern Bassoon

Faculty member and Washington National Opera principal bassoonist Joseph Grimmer performs an evening of 20th- and 21st-century works for bassoon. Join us for this exploration of the diverse sounds of the instrument from lyrical melodies to neo-classical and jazz-inspired themes to multiphonics!

Fall Choral Showcase: University Chorale & UMD Chamber Singers

Combining sacred text with Bernstein’s signature style, Chichester Psalms is a tuneful, uplifting, modern choral classic. Commissioned for the Cathedral of Chichester in Sussex’s 1965 music festival, the work melds the Hebrew language and the Christian choral tradition.

Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro

Regarded by many as the greatest opera of all time, this tale of deception is a romantic comedy accompanied by some of the most beautiful and familiar music ever written. Mozart takes audiences on a hilarious adventure as Figaro and Susanna overcome plotting and jealousy to make it to their wedding day. A winning combination of music and mischief.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

UMSO Concerto Competition Finals

School of Music students vie for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the UMD Symphony Orchestra in the final round of this annual competition.

Finalists perform 15- to 20-minute excerpts of a concerto or concert piece for an independent jury panel. Following the jury’s deliberation, a winner, runner-up and second runner-up will be announced.

Described as “not classical...but not not classical," string quartet and UMD School of Music alumni invoke dodge genre classification by tying together many traditions including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, minimalism, and even 16th century motets to create truly unique contemporary repertoire, written by and for the group. The Artist Partner Program brings you the new Speed of Sound Sessions (S.O.S.), a celebration of musicians who support and promote composers whose work was created in the 21st Century and who respond to the contemporary world in which we live. The S.O.S.

Chamber Music Showcase

School of Music student artists perform a moving collection of chamber music repertoire for strings, woodwinds, brass and piano. The culmination of rehearsal and coaching during the fall semester, this concert is an integral part of coursework for UMD School of Music students and provides a glimpse into the training they receive for performing in major ensembles.
