Relaxed performances welcome all behaviors and are designed to create a relaxed sensory experience for attendees. 

Modifications include:

  • Guests are free to talk and move out of their seats during the performance.

  • Ear plugs will be available in the venue for guests who prefer a quieter noise level.

Vital Signs: Creative Arts for Black Lives

Presented by The Clarice

In an effort to support student voice and action related to the Black Lives Matter movement, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, the UMD Office of Diversity and Inclusion and UMD Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy in partnership with Black Terps Matter award mini-grants to artists in the UMD community who are creating projects that affirm Black life and vitality and interrogate white supremacy and anti-Blackness.

2021-22 NextLOOK Preview: ft. Rochelle Rice, Chao Tian & Joseph Webb

Established in 2014 through a partnership between The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium, NextLOOK supports the development of new music, plays, dance and other experiences by performing artists based in DC, Maryland and Virginia who want to understand how their audience can become a creative partner.

NextLOOK ft. Joseph Webb: Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock

Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock is a performance art exhibition series that honors the liberation and eroticism of love. Through Black vernacular dance and reimagined visuals of historical album covers, this performance art exhibition celebrates the reggae sounds of Gregory Isaacs and culture of the lovers rock era of the 70s and 80s. The cast of Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock takes audience members on an interactive journey of movement prayers of courtship, heartbreak and back to love as the "Hopeless Romantic."

NextLOOK ft. Chao Tian: Unheard Sounds

Unheard Sounds is grounded in an exploration of immigrant artist's self-expression. It prompts cross-disciplinary creativity through improvisation and ensures a voice for the minority as well as an equitable hearing. This project is divided into two parts: monologue and dialogue, which will be represented by a collaboration between Chinese dulcimer virtuoso Chao Tian, dance artist and choreographer Shu-chen Cuff and award-winning world percussionist Tom Teasley.

Gamer Symphony Orchestra Small Ensemble Concert

The Gamer Symphony Orchestra Small Ensemble Concert is an opportunity for individual members and small groups to showcase their talents, as well as for the orchestra to perform pieces they otherwise could not as a full ensemble. Join them on a foray into the world of video game music!

NextLOOK ft. Rochelle Rice

Tell Her This Project is a visual art, music and storytelling experience created by musician and 2021-22 NextLOOK artist Rochelle Rice. This live performance features vignettes of the Tell Her This podcast woven between songs that deepen our understanding and appreciation of the story and the storyteller. Also featured, is the premiere of Rochelle Rice’s Strong Like Water is a multidimensional series of portraits and sound.

Maryland's brass ensembles join together to present a variety concert with musical selections ranging from classical to pops to jazz. Highlights include Anthony Plog's Suite for Six Trumpets, Josef Zawinul's Birdland, Freddie Mercury/Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Kansas' Carry On Wayward Son and Henri Tomasi's Fanfare Liturgiques.
