Songs of War: UMD Repertoire Orchestra

Throughout history, war has had a profound influence on classical music. Featuring cellist Frances Borowsky, runner up of the 2018-19 UMD Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, this concert will cover pieces from three different wartime periods:

In Memoriam: The Colored Soldiers Who Died for Democracy was written by William Grant Still, known for giving voice to African-American classical music in the first half of the 20th century, in January of 1944, at the height of the Second World War.

Vox Et Motus: UMD Wind Ensemble

Latin for "sound and motion," vox et motus is the inspiration for this concert featuring Spanish composer Oscar Navarro's lively II Concerto with Associate Professor Robert DiLutis on clarinet. The program will also include Gustav Holst's First Suite in E-flat for Military Band and Julie Giroux's Paprikash.

About the Ensemble:

Masterful Strings: Diana Cohen, violin, and Roman Rabinovich, piano

Concertmaster of the Calgary Symphony since 2013, Diana Cohen leads an active career as a soloist, chamber musician and arts administrator.
