IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OPERA LAFAYETTE & OPERACRÉOLE
Usually positioned at the back of the orchestra, members of the percussion section move center stage to reveal the colorful, melodic potential of their instruments in this striking concert of contemporary music.
UMD Balinese Gamelan Saraswati and UMD Japanese Koto Ensemble
I Nyoman Suadin and Yuriko Gandolfo, music directors
Andrea Brown, music director
Born from the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jennifer Jolley’s Questions to Heaven evokes the cosmos in an expansive soundscape that brings outer space to the concert hall. What begins as a quiet and contemplative solo line quickly gains momentum, bursting with nebulous color as the piece takes off. This work is a testament to and celebration of humanities collective accomplishments, and our ability to find beauty and connectedness even in isolation.
Semesterly chamber music recitals showcase students' creativity, initiative, collaboration and agency through the unique medium of chamber music. This recital will feature a broad range of styles and repertoire presented in a fresh, lively way.
UMD Jazz Ensemble, UMD Jazz Lab Band and University Jazz Band
Mark Williams, music director
Celebrate the season with classic jazz staples and timeless holiday tunes! This concert brings together three of the UMD School of Music's phenomenal jazz ensembles for a night of festive cheer.
