The UMD Chamber Singers perform a retrospective of the internationally acclaimed ensemble's work over the past academic year with music by Mozart, Handel and Bach, as well as a repeat performance of its 2019 commission from alumna Dale Trumbore '09, If I Say Yes. Completing the program will be selections from Brahms' beloved and cheerful Liebeslieder Waltzes, featuring faculty pianists Rita Sloan and Justina Lee. Come celebrate Professor Edward Maclary's two decades of service as director of UMD choral activities before his retirement at the end of this semester.

About the UMD Chamber Singers:

Under the direction of Professor Edward Maclary, the UMD Chamber Singers have achieved international renown and offer a wide array of experiences with music encompassing all styles and eras. The ensemble has appeared by invitation at major professional music conferences and won top prizes at international choral competitions. Alumni from its ranks are now singing and conducting professionally throughout the United States.

CONDUCTOR’S NOTE
 
As this is my final concert as the Director of Choral Activities and the Music Director of the UMD Chamber Singers, allow me to thank ALL of the wonderful student artists who have taken part in this ensemble since its inception in 2001. That list includes many who have gone on to important careers in music as professional singers, professional conductors, church musicians, academics, and (so dear to my heart) teachers. It also includes scientists, journalists, economists, mathematicians, poets, and researchers. They are all persons of astonishing intelligence, kindness, grace, humor, skill, and energy. And they can sing!! The impact that they have had on audiences both here on our campus and around the world has been profound. The impact that they have had on me is incalculable. I will carry my love and respect for them with me from here and it will continue to nourish and sustain me in all that I do. I am most grateful. And I look forward to the wonderful accomplishments for the ensemble under the direction of the new Music Director, Dr. Jason Max Ferdinand!
 
The music on tonight’s program is a summation of the core programmatic principles of the UMD Chamber Singers over the past two decades – performing music from all eras, performing music of proven artistic merit from the ‘canon’, and advocating for music that we believe is deserving of entry into the standard repertoire. It also highlights some of the music that we have been most highly engaged in when we are away from campus in our collaborations with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, with excerpts from Handel’s Messiah, the Magnificat of Bach, and Ein deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms. Finally, the selections of the Liebeslieder Waltzes point to the wonderful spirit of chamber music collaboration that I believe is a hallmark of the UMD School of Music, as we welcome faculty guest artists Rita Sloan and Justina Lee to join us at the keyboard. We hope you will enjoy it all. Thank you for your support over the years and for being with us this evening.
