UMD Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition

Which School of Music student will be the next featured soloist with the UMD Symphony Orchestra?

In the preliminary round of the annual UMSO Concerto Competition, students perform excerpts of a concerto or concert piece for an independent jury panel. A select number of competitors are advanced to the final round where a winner, runner-up and second runner-up are announced.

UMD Chamber Jazz

Swing with the UMD jazz combos as they play new tunes arranged by UMD jazz students and beloved standards. Attend both nights — each performance features a different program.

University & Community Band Concert

The University Band and Community Band share an evening of traditional and contemporary wind band music. 

Conducted by UMD alumnus Bill Sturgis and UMD Assistant Director of Bands, Eli R. Osterloh, this concert will be an exciting evening for the whole family! Children and adults who are thinking of starting to play an instrument are sure to be inspired.

TEMPO: Dutilleux and Friends

With 2016 as the year of celebrated French composer Henri Dutilleux's centenary, TEMPO presents a program of solo works by Dutilleux, as well as works by various other 20th and 21st century French composers. The program will include both early and late period Dutilleux works, such as Trois strophes sur le nom de Sacher, Sarabande et cortége pour bassoon et piano, and Sonate pour hautbois et piano.

Big Band Halloween Scream Performance

Screaming saxophones, wailing trumpets and spine-tingling piano are a thrill in this “spirited” evening of performances by the UMD Jazz Ensemble, UMD Jazz Lab Band and University Jazz Band.

UMD Wind Ensemble: Carmina Burana

An entirely instrumental arrangement of Carl Orff's monumental Carmina Burana is the centerpiece of the UMD Wind Ensemble's first concert of the 16-17 season.

  • Grainger: The Sussex Mummer' Christmas Carol
  • Husa: Cheetah
  • Orff, arr. Krance: Carmina Burana 

Music in Mind: Miriam Fried, Violin

Internationally renowned violinist Miriam Fried performs an all solo Bach program. Fried has played with virtually every major orchestra in the United States and Europe and has been a frequent guest with the principal orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, as well as with the Israel Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony. Recital tours have taken her to all of the major music centers in North America and to Brussels, London, Milan, Munich, Rome, Paris, Salzburg, Stockholm and Zurich.

UMD Repertoire Orchestra Season Premiere

Join the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra in their first concert of the 2016-2017 season with symphonic masterpieces conducted by James Ross, Director of Orchestras, and UMD graduate conductors Tiffany Lu and Shen Yiwen.

The University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra is a unique all-campus orchestra that is open to music majors, non-music majors and members of the University of Maryland community. Led by graduate conducting students at UMD, the orchestra prides itself on a wide range of projects, collaborations and repertoire.
