2021-22 ARTS & HUMANITIES DEAN’S LECTURE SERIES

As part of Arts for All, a campuswide initiative leveraging the combined power of the arts, technology and social justice to address the grand challenges of our time, the College of Arts and Humanities presents violin prodigy and social justice advocate Vijay Gupta. Gupta, who in 2007 became the youngest violinist ever to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has emerged as a leading voice for the role of music to heal, inspire, provoke change and foster social connection.

The Crossing: Carols After a Plague • LIVESTREAM

Dedicated to the commissioning and performance of music by living composers, professional chamber choir The Crossing explores ways in which to expand choral writing. With more than 100 commissions, the ensemble has received two Grammy awards for “Best Choral Performance” for recordings of works that elevate dynamic compositional voices.

The UMD School of Music's graduate fellowship string ensemble, the Thalea String Quartet, explores the American influences behind the works of Antonín Dvořák, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) and The Beatles. The program will also include Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges's String Quartet No. 4 in C minor.

Orchestra Concerto Competition Prelims: UMD Symphony Orchestra

Join the search for the UMD Symphony Orchestra’s next featured soloist. In the first round of this annual competition, UMD School of Music students perform concerto excerpts or concert pieces for an independent jury panel. With each round of the competition, the field narrows until the final round, when a winner and runners-up are announced.
