Renegade is a school-wide series of recitals, masterclasses, and talks that seek to empower us in forging unique and innovative career paths by bringing to campus the most creative minds in our field. Whether seasoned professionals or young entrepreneurs, Renegade speakers are influential thinkers who have ploughed musical paths beyond the concert hall and touched lives in powerful and expressive ways.
This program features two very different but equally epic symphonies, including Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3. The 35-minute first movement is a miniature symphony in and of itself and will be performed in transcription on this concert along with the transformative Finale of the entire work. The first half of the program features composer Johan de Meij's dramatic and colorful Symphony No. 1 inspired by The Lord of the Rings books by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Omer Quartet, the School of Music's Fellowship Quartet is pleased to host its second Music for Food Concert to benefit the UMD Campus Pantry. Professor Kenneth Slowik will open the evening with a harpsichord performance of a chromatic fantasy and fugue by Bach.
The National Orchestral Institute + Festival revives Doug Fitch's groundbreaking production of Stravinsky's Petrushka first created in 2008 at the University of Maryland and later seen in performances by the New York Philharmonic. The ballet score is infused with orchestra participation, puppeteers, live video, and much more.
