UMD Summer Chorus 2018

Since 2002 the UMD Summer Chorus has given college students, community singers, and high school choristers the opportunity to perform major works in a friendly, stress-free setting. We're excited to announce this year's performance of Haydn's Harmoniemesse on Saturday, July 28 at 8PM.

The Harmoniemesse, or “Wind Band Mass” of 1802, is Haydn’s last major composition. Symphonic in scope, the mass encapsulates the essence of the classical era while also looking forward to the harmonic developments to come in the 19th Century.

Second Season

Lost Sons

This hip-hop theater piece explores the impact of mass incarceration in the black community. The effects of an imprisoned father ripple throughout the entire family and community, and the play highlights the sharp differences in families with and without a father figure around. It also demonstrates differences in how white men and black men are sentenced.

Rockfish

Second Season

Fuse is a dance work that dissects the juxtaposition of minimality and maximality.

“Sometimes I shut my eyes,
A room with walls fills the darkness.
My current state decides the fate
Of the surroundings that besiege me.

In calmer times the walls are bare.
Nothing fills the space,
Nothing’s in the air.

But in polar moments of anger and stress,
The room is disgusting,
The room is a mess.

I haven’t found an in-between,
and I wonder what feeling would cause that scene.”

Hapa

Second Season

This original theater piece follows two souls who are repeatedly reincarnated in Black women’s bodies during feminist movements of the past, present and future. As these embodied souls reconnect with one another across three distinct time periods, they struggle to reconcile the realities of their race, gender and sexuality within societies that seek to deny their humanity.

Sonic Infusion

Sonic Infusion is a social refreshment that will energize, recharge and inspire your creative circulation for the week ahead. Cultivating a soothing ambiance necessary on Sundays, Sonic Infusion blends familiar and obscure soundscapes by DJ Kryptk, an artistic installation by Shyama Kuver of Heart Over Crown, and tarot reading by Malaya "StarShine" Nicole of the Honeypot Hangout.

Hamilton de Holanda Trio

Hamilton de Holanda is one of the most acclaimed Brazilian contemporary musicians, known for his tour-de-force compositions and stunning command of his instrument–the bandolim, or mandolin. “Virtuosic,” “brilliant”, and the “Jimi Hendrix of the mandolin” are some of ways that this musician who sets world audiences ablaze has been described.

“He is the personification of everything we want in a musician…. He has depth of soul and feeling.
He is a national treasure!” — Wynton Marsalis
