Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Tokyo Opera City, the Mozarteum, Petronas Towers, the Barbican, and Suntory Hall.

Ravel, Britten and Strauss

An evening of operatic soundscapes pairing a semi-staged performance of Ravel’s comedy L’heure espagnole with orchestral suites by Britten and Strauss. In Maurice Ravel’s L’heure espagnole, vocal artists from Wolf Trap Opera share the story of a respected watchmaker, Torquemada, and his wife Concepcion's romantic escapades. Will Concepcion hatch a successful plan to deal with Torquemada’s frequent absence? Find out the hilarious consequences with Wolf Trap Opera and NOI+F!

Gershwin's Concerto in F

A riveting journey of influential American music led by Grammy-winning conductor David Alan Miller featuring pianist Kevin Cole, the world’s leading authority on Gershwin’s piano literature. Gershwin’s virtuosic and jazz-inspired Concerto in F is paired with landmarks of American repertoire by Joan Tower, John Harbison and Walter Piston. Tower’s Sequoia implements winds, brass and percussion to paint both the tall branching and the deep rooting of the giant redwood trees.

Mahler's Symphony No. 5

Michael Stern leads a triumphant conclusion to the 2019 festival with music by Anna Clyne, Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. Clyne’s turbulent This Midnight Hour is based on poetry of Juan Ramón Jiménez and Charles Baudelaire and evokes a surreal nocturnal scene. Wagner’s ethereal Prelude to Act I from Lohengrin paints a shimmering vision of angels and the Holy Grail, and answers questions regarding the purity and sanctity of love.

Take the Reins

NOI+F musicians shine in this special performance that combines the demands of chamber music playing with those of large ensemble performance. Performing without a conductor, players will lead each other in diverse chamber orchestra repertoire by Stravinsky, Wagner and Menotti. Adelphi Quartet, NOI+F’s Sphinx Fellowship Ensemble, returns as a featured solo ensemble in Igor Stravinsky’s neoclassical ballet suite from Pulcinella.
