Musicology Lecture: Sara Haefeli, Ithaca College

The years 1967–69 were important for Cage as his musical aesthetics and political philosophy shifted in significant ways during this time. Based on a comprehensive study of Cage’s letters and ephemera, Sara Haefeli claims that Cage’s work turned away from the more radical actions of the early 1960s to more traditionally conceived and composed music, poetry and art by the end of the decade.

School of Music Tribute to Chris Vadala

After 25 years of dedication to the School of Music, beloved Director of Jazz Studies Chris Vadala passed away from cancer on January 17, 2019. We invite you to join us in celebrating his life, legacy and the jazz program that he created with performances by current faculty, the UMD Jazz Ensemble, Chris Vadala All-Star Alumni Band and featured guest artist, trumpeter Allen Vizzutti. Please join us after the concert for a reception.

SPOTLIGHT: School of Music Showcase

This annual celebration showcases the range and diversity of exceptional talent across the School of Music in an exhilarating program curated by faculty member Sarah Frisof. This student showcase will feature Oculus [Five] Fellowship Woodwind Quintet, solo piano works by Clara Schumann, Jessie Montgomery’s Strum for string quartet, Mozart’s “Alleluja” from Exsultate, jubilate, K. 165 for soprano and jazz classics by Duke Ellington and Miles Davis.
