November 13, 2012 – College Park, MD – The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) presents the cutting-edge visions of its dance faculty members in the Maryland Dance Ensembles’s Breath, Rhythm, Flight on November 30-December 1 at the Clarice Smith Center. Breath, Rhythm, Flight is directed by TDPS dance professor Alvin Mayes and will also feature the work of special guest choreographer Susan Marshall, who serves as artistic director of the New York-based Susan Marshall & Company.
About the Performances
Breath, Rhythm, Flight is a diverse program that explores issues of love, loss, time, experience, and our relationship to the universe. Be Still My Heart, a duet that explores the unknowingness in the state of impending loss, and Fields of View, a piece with emphasis on swirling movement and visual design, will be performed at both the matinee and evening performances. About Director Alvin Mayes
Alvin Mayes is Director of Undergraduate Dance Studies with TDPS and is also Artistic Director for the Maryland Dance Ensemble in residence at UMD. Throughout his career, he has choreographed more than 150 works for dancers, actors, singers, and athletes in the area. He is this year’s recipient of the Maryland Council for Dance Award for Outstanding Service to Dance in Maryland. The award is presented annually to one of Maryland's finest teachers and promoters of dance and dance education.
About Guest Choreographer Susan Marshall
Since 1985, Susan Marshall has created over 40 dances on her company, Susan Marshall & Company. She has also created works for the Lyon Opera Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. A 2000 recipient of a MacArthur fellowship, Marshall has received numerous other awards, including three New York Dance and Performance Awards (BESSIES) for Outstanding Choreographic Achievement. In addition to her own company’s work, Marshall serves as Director of Dance at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts, having assumed that post in September 2009.
