NextNOW Fest: Jefferson Pinder: Prowl

This seven-minute video summarizes a 90-minute performance during which Pinder provoked layers of surveillance by having black and brown performers drive slowly through Mount Greenwood, Chicago, where many Chicago police officers live. As the drivers observed the neighborhood, uniformed police surveilled the black and brown performers as they quietly circled the neighborhood in a caravan of twenty vehicles while the hostile community watched. Tensions rose as police and residents sought to gain control over the situation.

NextNOW Fest: Video in the Atrium (ViTA) by Cristina Lucas • UMD Art Gallery

Organized by the UMD Art Gallery, this new program aims to bring art outside the walls of the gallery and activate an underutilized section of the Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building’s large atrium and gathering space. The first in the series will be The People That Is Missing (2019) by Spanish artist Cristina Lucas, a video work that underscores the most devastating effects and consequences of climate change.
