This concert brings together the UMD Jazz Ensemble, UMD Jazz Lab Band and the University Jazz Band in innovative interpretations of classic and contemporary jazz works. You won’t want to miss these three UMD School of Music jazz ensembles celebrating the works of Duke Ellington, Bobby Watson, McCoy Tyner and many more! This performance will feature award-winning pianist George Cables.

Korean Drumming Concert

ABOUT THE EVENT

UMD Korean Percussion Ensemble
Sebastian Wang, music director

Experience the vibrant beat of samulnori under the direction of Sebastian Wang. This modern incarnation of traditional Korean folk music celebrates harvest time and provides a lively soundtrack to dancing. The ensemble is comprised of four types of percussion instruments—an hourglass drum, a barrel drum, a small gong and a large gong—each representing a natural element: rain, clouds, lightning and wind, respectively.

University Orchestra December Concert

ABOUT THE EVENT

UOrch performs its December concert, featuring works by Mozart, Borodin and Fauré. This performance with feature Kyle Glasgow (M.M. 2023) as the soloist for Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major.

Orchestra Concerto Competition Finals

ABOUT THE EVENT

UMD School of Music students vie for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the UMD Symphony Orchestra in the final round of this annual competition. Finalists perform 15- to 20-minute excerpts of a concerto or concert piece for an independent jury panel. Following the jury’s deliberation, a winner and runners-up will be announced.
