J.S. Bach, known as the great master, wrote more than 200 cantatas, and UMD Choral Activities aims to sing them all in this series of short performances led by conductors in the graduate program. This performance will feature Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 62.

Gamelan Concert: UMD Balinese Gamelan Saraswati

ABOUT THE EVENT

Under the direction of I Nyoman Suadin, the UMD Balinese Gamelan Saraswati Ensemble presents an evening of traditional Balinese music. The ensemble takes its name from Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge and the arts. The gong kebyar style percussive instruments used by this ensemble were built by I Wayan Beratha, a leading instrument maker, composer, performer and teacher in Bali.

Korean Drumming Concert

UMD Korean Percussion Ensemble
Sebastian Wang, music director

Experience the vibrant beat of samulnori under the direction of Sebastian Wang. This modern incarnation of traditional Korean folk music celebrates harvest time and provides a lively soundtrack to dancing. The ensemble is comprised of four types of percussion instruments—an hourglass drum, a barrel drum, a small gong and a large gong—each representing a natural element: rain, clouds, lightning and wind, respectively.

Spring Choral Collage: Tactus, Treble Choir & University Chorale

An evening of eclectic repertoire that will be sure to inspire! Join us in sharing the immense power of many voices joined together as one! The evening concludes with excerpts from Carl Orff’s stirring choral masterwork Carmina Burana.

Conductors' Concert: UMD Wind & Symphony Orchestra

UMD Symphony Orchestra and UMD Wind Orchestra

The UMD Symphony Orchestra and UMD Wind Orchestra combine for this concert led by members of the graduate conducting studios. Professional guest conductors often appear by invitation and hold workshops with UMD School of Music students in preparation for this concert.

Chamber Music Recital #2

ABOUT THE EVENT

Semesterly chamber music recitals showcase students' creativity, initiative, collaboration and agency through the unique medium of chamber music. This recital will feature a broad range of styles and repertoire presented in a fresh, lively way. Part 1 will take place on May 7 at 10:30 a.m. and Part 3 will take place on May 9 at 7 p.m.
