Cellist Darrett Adkins coaches UMD cello students on their solo and chamber repertoire. Adkins has appeared as soloist with the Tokyo Philharmonic, Tochio Soloisten, National Symphony of Brazil, Suwon Philharmonic, and the New Hampshire, North Carolina, Greenwich, and Monadnock Music Festival orchestras. Adkins joined Juilliard faculty in 2002 and the Oberlin Conservatory faculty in 2003.
One of the causes of World War I was nationalism, which was a growing force at the turn of the twentieth century. During this time, nationalism was also present in classical music, and composers often quoted folk or popular tunes. In this pre-concert lecture, we will explore some of the popular tunes that are used in the program and examine how music can be nationalistic.
William VerMeulen, Principal Horn of the Houston Symphony, leads a masterclass with musicians from the National Orchestral Institute. Get an insider's view on the training each NOI musician receives during their time at the festival.

As The Clarice is dedicated to educating and presenting the generation of artists and creative innovators, the NextNOW Fest Alumni Commissioning Project supports the creation of new work from alumni of the UMD School of Music (SOM) and UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) to be performed at NextNOW Fest.
