Women play men regularly in opera. For centuries, higher voices were equated with nobility, purity and even virility. What does this say about attitudes toward gender and the transgendered in ages past? What is our experience today in watching women play romantic male leads and heroes? Sociology, psychology and politics collide in music.

Our human imprint and the memory of our movement linger in spaces well after we have migrated through them. The One-Mile Radius Project explores these imprints and the unique spaces within a one-mile radius of Joe’s Movement Emporium. In collaboration with Joe’s, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Brentwood Arts Exchange and their workshop participants, Orange Grove Dance will investigate the personal and uniquely traversed spaces of the community.
Residency at Joe's Movement Emporium: November 14-18, 2016
Daraja performs uniquely original works by American composers that reflect the spirit of our culture: individualistic expression, diversity and cultural assimilation.
Daraja has the distinct honor to share the stage with faculty member Rita Sloan for Poulenc’s Sextet for Piano and Winds. Also featured on the program are a fascinating but rather unknown quintet by the 20th-century Norwegian composer Johan Kvandal, a transcription of a Bach Sinfonia in b minor from his Cantata BWV 209 “Non sa che sia dolore,” and the final quintet of Franzi Danzi, Op. 68 no.3 in d minor.
