MacArthur Fellow and composer/drummer Tyshawn Sorey is a leading young artist blurring the boundary between composed and improvised music. His efforts to shatter boundaries by weaving classical composition and improvisation are influenced by history’s boldest composers. The  Artist Partner Program brings you the new Speed of Sound Sessions (S.O.S.), a celebration of musicians who support and promote composers whose work was created in the 21st century and who respond to the contemporary world in which we live. The Immigrants 1: What is America to You?: UMD Wind Orchestra

A leading voice among collegiate ensembles in premiering new works for winds, the 10th anniversary season of the University of Maryland Wind Orchestra, led by Dr. Michael Votta, will feature faculty soloists, world premiere performances and masterworks of the 20th and 21st centuries. UMWO has performed in side-by-side collaborations with major professional ensembles and has been invited to perform at international, national and regional conferences.

Program includes:

Masterful Strings: Colin Carr, cello

Colin Carr will perform all Six Suites for Solo Cello by J.S. Bach. Written in the 1720’s, these pieces catapulted the cello into the realm of ‘solo’ instrument. Encapsulating in one voice the entire gamut of human emotion, the act of performing them chronologically as one complete work has become the cellist’s Everest — a feat of both artistry and incredible stamina.

Faculty Artist Series: Woodwind Faculty Showcase

School of Music faculty collaborate for an evening of chamber music by Czech composers Pavel Haas, Leoš Janaček, and Bohuslav Martinů. Woodwind faculty Sarah Frisof, Robert DiLutis, Joseph Grimmer, Erich Heckscher, Mark Hill, and Gregory Miller are joined by pianist Rita Sloan and guest alumnus, former Marine Band bass clarinetist Jay Niepoetter.

NOI[SE]

The National Orchestral Institute + Festival joins with the UMD Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to produce the 2nd Annual NOI[SE] event, a place where musicians join with creative innovators to examine, rethink, and renovate the orchestral experience.

Join us at MilkBoy ArtHouse to experience a series of provocations that imagine new ways for audiences to interact with orchestral musicians. This night of performances has been curated by The Innovation Studio at NOI+F, a team of musicians and designers who have been working alongside NOI+F.

Community Concert at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church

Members of the National Orchestral Institute perform works for brass and woodwind chamber ensembles at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in College Park, featuring works by Henri Tomasi, Émile Bernard, and Marcel Dupré with David Houston, organ. A free pot-luck picnic follows.

Join Art Works Now, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Urban Arts Leadership Program, and Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance as we collaborate to create a public work of art to be displayed at MilkBoy ArtHouse in College Park! 

All ages are welcome and feel free to drop by anytime between 10 AM and 1 PM.
 

SPARK! pre-concert event: Pushing the Tempo: Investigating Equity and Inclusion of Race and Gender in NOI+F

Addressing the existence of institutional equity and inclusion is as necessary as it is urgent. The photo exhibit Pushing the Tempo: Investigating Equity and Inclusion of Race and Gender in the National Orchestral Institute + Festival was curated in an effort to promote healthy communication about these issues.
