ABOUT THE EVENT

In April 1993, working under the name the Women’s Coalition for Change, nine women at the University of Maryland undertook an art action that jolted the campus and attracted national news coverage and passionate dialogue. The art action, which involved elements of performance, installation and postering during the annual Art Attack festival, came to be known in the media as the “rapist list” because a component of the action involved the publication of every identifiably male name in the campus student directory on flyers underneath the headline, “Notice: These Men Are Potential Rapists.”

Now, 30+ years after the art action, NextNOW Fest will host a look back at the event, including an exhibition of archival material, a video screening and a panel discussion with three of the original artists.

ABOUT NEXTNOW FEST

Started in 2014, Clarice Presents’ annual NextNOW Fest is an inspiring arts experience that celebrates imagination, creativity and community. In addition to the core festival nights at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, we’re thrilled to continue partnerships with student-led groups, academic departments and university-based arts venues to hold festival events throughout campus.

NextNOW Fest is a signature event in University of Maryland's Arts for All initiative, which leverages the combined power of the arts, technology and social justice to address the grand challenges of our time.

FUNDING

NextNOW Fest is supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council and The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation.
