From an ornate wind instrument called a saenghwang to a zither-like behemoth called a gayageum, nine-member Korean band Ak Dan Gwang Chil, or ADG7, pairs the traditional tools of their country’s folk music and sacred tunes with three singers and a panoply of percussion. ADG7 taps multiple traditions of Korean music, drawing on the songbooks of what is now the Hwanghae province. But the music they make is unapologetically and enthusiastically modern, with magnetic hooks delivered by colorfully clad singers who bound around the stage.
Theatrically minded, ADG7 mirrors that anachronistic fusion of sounds visually, creating frisson by allowing the sight of old traditions to brush against the sound of contemporary exuberance. In 2021-22, ADG7 will share their magic with K-12 students in Prince George's County Public Schools via livestreamed demos and performances. They will also visit ethnomusicology students in the UMD School of Music and host a dinner with community members who perform in Korean ensembles. Time spent with this group is a musical celebration unlike any you’ve ever experienced!

ABOUT ADG7
Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7) is a multi-award winning Korean traditional music group, featuring six Korean traditional musicians and three powerhouse female folk singers. ADG7 performs repertoire from the sacred, shamanic and secular gut (ritual music) and minyo (folk song) traditions of the Hwanghae-do region, nowadays a western province of North Korea. Their powerful engaging performance will immerse audiences into a spiritual experience and bring blessings of positive energy originating from gut and minyo.
ADG7 was organized in 2015, the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Their music expresses the true meaning of liberation and South Korea’s desire for reunification. They recently won multiple awards including Best Group at the 2018 KBS Korean Traditional Music Award and Sori Frontier Award at the 2017 Jeongju International Sori Festival. ADG7 has recently performed at WOMEX (World Music Expo) 2019 and globalFEST 2020 as one of their official artists and became one of the 2020-2021 Mid Atlantic Tour Roster Artists.

FROM THE CURATOR
The music and musicians of Ak Dan Gwang Chil left me with something beautiful and hard to describe. Watching and listening to them perform was a journey through time, geography and culture and did nothing less than left me vibrating. I had the pleasure of experiencing ADG7 live twice before tonight–my introduction to them was at the World Music Expo in Tampere, Finland in 2019 and then I saw them again in New York as part of GlobalFEST in January 2020. In both instances I was attending performing arts conferences which meant lots of panel discussions and networking and industry analysis. In both instances, ADG7 awoke something in me and reminded me why it all matters, what music can make you feel, how our pasts and presents are connected. These amazing musicians were supposed to join us last season and we are incredibly grateful that they were able to delay their tour and rebuild it this year to once again include The Clarice and College Park.”
