Have you noticed how many op-eds there are about “lazy Millennials and Gen Z-ers”? Have you ever seen a conversation shut down with an “Ok, Boomer”? How did this divide come to be? Can younger and older generations make peace and work together?

The First Year Book Program will be inviting the filmmakers behind "Divided We Fall" to produce an episode of this docu-series that “shows ordinary Americans wrestling with what it truly means to be an American, the divides that prevent it, and what we can do to bridge the gaps.” The previous events focused on political divisions, dividing the casts into Red and Blue categories.

At UMD, we are hoping to explore a generational divide instead of a political one, focusing on how the perceptions of younger and older generations (represented by students and faculty/staff, respectively) differ and cause conflict, and ultimately how they can better understand one another. The goal of this event is not to change anyone’s mind but instead is to provide perspective on the various life experiences that lead to a certain point of view, with the ultimate goal of understanding, cooperation, collaboration and the ability to work together to get things done.

We are hosting the producers of the docu-series for a screening of clips from previous episodes and a discussion about the project and process on Tuesday, April 7.
