Brazilian singer Xênia França mixes tenderness and grit and resolve and romance in songs that weave together samba, soul, electronica and balladry. Latin Grammy-nominated França is personally and politically charged with songs that demand respect for her and her time. Backed by a band as deep and dynamic as her voice, França is a live powerhouse, able to challenge and thrill in the space of a single song.

Born in the coastal state of Bahia, França relocated to São Paulo to be, as she remembers, her country’s Gisele Bündchen. She discovered her leadership and voice for Black pride as lead singer of Aláfia, a kaleidoscopic big band that channeled funk, hip-hop and traditional Brazilian sounds into vibrant anthems. Over the years, França has become a beacon of female empowerment, especially among Black women

The Clarice's Visiting Artist Series is committed to providing extensive campus and community engagement opportunities that extend academic learning and cultural opportunities. As part of the 2020–21 season, França co-hosted an Arts Citizenship Talk (ACTnow), visited classes in the School of Music and presented an artist talk about her new work.
