Program Notes:
In this multi-genre performance, the UMD Wind Orchestra opens with arrangements of popular songs by Sigur Ros’ front man Jon Por “Jonsi” Birgission.
UMWO then gives the Eastern U.S. premiere of Dance Concerto for clarinet and wind ensemble with Paul Cigan, clarinetist with the National Symphony Orchestra.
The world premiere of James Syler’s Three Places in Jazz completes the concert, fusing jazz, be-bop and classical forms to evoke the landscapes of New Orleans’ Congo Square in the late 1800s, Storyville in 1915, and Minton’s Playhouse in 1940s' New York.
