Program Notes:
Composer David Maslaka says of his piece, A Child’s Garden of Dreams, “‘In deepest need I cry to you’ is a motto for this entire work, and a prayer for our time of crisis.”
As the feature of the UMD Wind Ensemble’s program, A Child’s Garden of Dreams uses the modern wind band’s rich sonorities to illustrate the unsettling dream world of a child approaching death.
The program balances Maslanka’s work with Herbert Haufrecht’s raucous Symphony for Brass and Timpani; Gordon Jacob’s cheerful setting of English folk-songs, Old Wine in New Bottles; and a wind band arrangement of Ravel’s La Valeé des Cloches.
