    College Park, MD—In response to the seemingly perpetual killings of young black men in America, internationally acclaimed auteur Ping Chong and noted director and dramaturg Talvin Wilks created Collidescope: Adventures in Pre- and Post-Racial America in collaboration with UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies’ graduate and undergraduate designers and performers. The show runs November 7-14 in the Kogod Theatre at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and is a world premiere performance. Conversations with the cast, designers and special panelists follow performances held November 8, 11 and 13, respectively.

    College Park, MD—BASETRACK LIVE, a multimedia performance piece, examines the cost of war at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on November 1 at 8pm. By utilizing a live musical score, film, photographs and text from social media exchanges, BASETRACK LIVE shows how war affects not only service members and veterans but also their families and communities. Join the artists for a conversation with the audience following the performance.

    College Park, MD— The Kronos Quartet reflects on the centennial of World War I with a performance at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s Kay Theatre on October 25 at 8pm. The first half of the program features Prelude to a Black Hole, a compilation of unusual works chosen by Kronos to convey the serenity and impact of the World War I centennial.  Works include Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for String Quartet, Ravel’s Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis and Rachmaninov’s Nunc Dimittis from All-Night Vigil. The second part of the program is Beyond Zero: 1914-1918, a new work composed by Aleksandra Vrebalov and accompanied by a Bill Morrison film, which uses rare archival World War I footage.

    May 12, 2014 – College Park, MD - The UMD School of Music’s National Orchestral Institute and Festival (NOI) welcomes nearly 100 talented orchestral musicians for four-weeks of dynamic music-making, May 31-June 28, at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. NOI features outstanding young musicians and world-renowned conductors in chamber and orchestral concerts that celebrate musical traditions while also exploring new ways of engaging audiences.  Selected by a rigorous, cross-country audition process, NOI participants quickly coalesce into energetic ensembles that perform adventuresome programming. Performances take place every Saturday night between May 31 and June 28, 2014; additional free events are open to the public.

    College Park. MD -– Three distinguished University of Maryland faculty are the recipients of a 2014 Individual Artist Award (IIA) from the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC).  Linda Mabbs (voice) and Robert DiLutis (clarinet) from the School of Music, and Sharon Mansur (dance) of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies were selected by MSAC for creating works of exceptional quality in a variety of artistic disciplines.  The grants range in value from $1,000 to $3,000.

    College Park, MD— The UMD Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of James Ross, will continue exploring the relationship between movement and music with a choreographic approach to Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring on Sunday, May 4 at 4pm in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s Dekelboum Concert Hall. The UMD Symphony Orchestra is part of the School of Music.

    UMD alumna and renowned choreographer Liz Lerman developed the orchestra’s movements through improvisatory rehearsal technique. The program also includes Dutilleux’s Métaboles and Gershwin/Bennett’s Porgy and Bess: Symphonic Picture.

    March 31, 2014College Park, MD – Actor Denis O’Hare (“True Blood”, “American Horror Story”) and director Lisa Peterson transform Homer’s great poem about the Trojan War into an intimate solo show, Homer’s Coat’s An Iliad, on May 2 and May 3 at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at UMD. O’Hare and Peterson, the founding members of Homer’s Coat, developed An Iliad as a way to address what it means to be a nation at war. The piece also pays tribute to the language and spirit of the classic poem but features mostly modern vernacular to illuminate the heroism and horror of warfare.
