Theatre is alive and well in Washington, DC, and in particular at the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS). Three of TDPS’s own were lauded at the 29th annual Helen Hayes Awards celebration, one of the country’s most prestigious cultural honors which recognizes and celebrates outstanding achievement in over 80 professional theatres around Washington.

Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig, artistic directors of PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER since 1987, have gained an international following for work that transforms the familiar into the “mysterious, the subversive, and the intimate”. The dance partners, known for their contemporary, site-specific projects and community dance/theater/video installations are also an academic team at the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, where they are associate professors of dance.

Susie Farr, our Executive Director, has been awarded the Sue Hess Arts Advocate of the Year Award by Maryland Citizens for the Arts (MCA). The award was presented in person by its namesake, Sue Hess, at Maryland Arts Day in Annapolis on Wednesday, February 20. 

Leigh Wilson Smiley Appointed Director of School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies

The University of Maryland (UMD) College of Arts and Humanities has appointed Leigh Wilson Smiley director of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.

Smiley is the former associate director of TDPS and served as the School’s first head of the MFA in Performance (MFAP) program, and played an integral role in establishing the degree in 2010. She has taught at UMD since 2003. Read more here.

The University of Maryland will welcome two legendary international keyboard percussion ensembles, Percussions Claviers de Lyon and Kroumata Percussion Ensemble to the School of Music in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, February 25 – 28, 2013 for a series of concerts, lectures and masterclasses.
