Program Notes:

Join us in person at The Clarice! Please note that this performance will not be livestreamed.

Join us for a diverse concert celebrating cellists of all stripes! Guest artists Emilio and Cara Colón (a married duo of cellists!) will be joined by cello faculty member Eric Kutz, alumna Frances Borowsky and students of the UMD cello studio. The concert will feature the world premiere of Caricaturists for Three Cellos by American composer Maria Newman. Written this year specifically for the collaboration of Kutz and the Colón’s, the piece’s three movements highlight Newman’s energetic, friendly style. Also of note will be a performance of Triptych for Three Cellos by Finnish composer Olli Mustonen. Alternating between hauntingly elegiac and furiously relentless, this work was commissioned in 2014 by a UMD alumnus. The concert will conclude with a multiple cello arrangement of renowned Tango composer Astor Piazzolla’s sizzling La Muerte Del Angel.
