Program Notes:

Karen Abrahamson Thomas, winner of the 2012 UMSO Concerto Competition, performs Alberto Ginastera’s bold Harp Concerto.

The music reflects influences of Argentinean folk music and great 20th-century masters such as Stravinsky and Bartók, and shows the full range of the harp as a solo instrument.

The program will also include Webern’s alluring Six Pieces, op. 6 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, op. 68, in C minor.

Review by MoCoVox

The Harp Concerto by Alberto Ginastera dates from 1964 and is a very modern, though accessible score. Ginastera uses a lot of dance rhythms from his native Argentina for very athletic fast movements. The slower sections dip into mystical moments, just like the magic realism so common in modern Latin American literature.
