Event Attributes

On April 26th, Maryland Day 2014 will go down as the most innovative in the history of the University of Maryland. The Maryland Center for Health Equity, in the School of Public Health, has joined forces with the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center to present “The Health Equity Drum Circle: Drum Beats for Health and Wellness.”

Our Fearless Idea is to mobilize over 1,400 hand drummers, expert and novice, adults, children and entire families from across the campus, the state and the region to create an awesome hand drum circle designed to set a new Guinness World Record.

To accomplish our goal, we must recruit 1400 drummers and ensure that there are enough hand drums to go around. We would be most grateful if you would register yourself and/or your group to drum at Maryland Day. Hand drum donations are also being accepted.

After the event, the Maryland Center for Health Equity will donate 100% of the hand drums to local school and community music programs.

School of Public Health honors Nelson Mandela with a memorial drum circle

The university honored the former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who 12 years ago spoke at Cole Field House, with a memorial drum circle in the lobby of the public health school Friday afternoon.

A group of about 40 people representing many ages, ethnicities and races circled around the lobby for the celebration, their thuds echoing those of a heartbeat.
