COVID-19 Updates for the 2020 National Orchestral Institute and Festival

Thursday, April 23, 2020 at 2:45pm ET

In light of the rapidly evolving coronavirus pandemic and out of a deep concern for the well-being of our students, faculty, staff and audience members, we regret to announce that the National Orchestral Institute + Festival scheduled to take place between May 30 and June 27, 2020 has been canceled.

While we are deeply saddened to not convene in-person this year, all students slated to attend our 2020 festival have been given the option to defer their admission to our 2021 festival. We also remain committed to finding creative ways in which to engage virtually, both with our audiences and with the next generation of orchestral musicians, composers and administrators, through:

  • Online Education: virtual masterclasses, lectures and Q&A sessions and Composer Training Program activities

  • Livestreamed Performances: we hope to expand our NOI+F at Noon programming model and kickoff an additional livestreamed performance series that feature faculty alumni and 2020 students. Follow us on Facebook to view past and upcoming performances!

  • Broadcasts: highlights from the NOI+F archives broadcast through our digital channels

Stay tuned to your email, our website and our social media for a full schedule of public virtual experiences. As we transition into our virtual programming for 2020, we also ask that you consider making a gift that will offset the loss of ticket and program revenues. Your contributions will help us provide online offerings to the students and prepare us for an incredible return in 2021.

At this time, the 2020 National Orchestral Institute + Festival (NOI+F ) is proceeding as scheduled. NOI+F administration is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with University of Maryland leadership and state health officials.

  • In the event that NOI+F is cancelled, all Program and Room & Board Fees will be reimbursed.

  • For information on reimbursement of air or ground travel, contact your chosen carrier.

  • In consideration of accepted students affected by nationwide university and conservatory closures, we are extending the festival acceptance deadline to Monday, March 16, 2020.

  • Offers to students on the alternate list will continue to be made available on a rolling basis. The updated cancellation and reimbursement policies noted above will still apply.

  • All participating students will receive updates on the status of NOI+F 2020 via email as they become available. Information will also be published in this page.

The safety and health of students, faculty and staff are NOI+F’s utmost priorities. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact NOI+F Director Richard Scerbo directly at rscerbo@umd.edu or 301.405.1900.
