November 19, 2012 – College Park, MD – The School of Music ushers in the holidays with Music in Mind: The Festive Baroque on Sunday, December 9 at 3 p.m. The University of Maryland Chamber Singers and Festive Baroque Orchestra join with faculty members for a performance of Bach’s Magnificat, also known as the Song of Mary or Canticle of Mary.
The program will also include two other works featuring faculty members as soloists. James Stern, violin, and Mark Hill, oboe, perform Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe in D minor, and Baroque music specialist Kenneth Slowik will perform Telemann’s Overture in D Major for viola da gamba and strings while simultaneously leading the Festive Baroque Orchestra. C. Paul Heins serves as the Chorus Master.
About Bach’s Magnificat
Bach first composed a version of the Magnificat for Christmas in 1723, and reworked it ten years later for the Feast of the Visitation. The work’s Latin text is the canticle of Mary, mother of Jesus, as told in the Gospel of Luke. The most popular and best-known of all the Gospel canticles, the Magnificat was originally composed in the key of E-flat major and transposed into the brighter key of D major in the reworked version.

The Festive Baroque is part of the School of Music’s Music in Mind series, which aims to celebrate the role of music in our culture and our lives, explore sources of inspiration and points of intersection in musical traditions, and present music in a context that encourages reflection and discovery. Music in Mind also continues a long-standing tradition of supporting the School of Music undergraduate scholarship fund through concert revenue.
