Sue Chiang has been at The Clarice since its opening in 2001. Primary responsibilities include patterning costumes for all theatre, dance and opera performances. Sue also teaches Stage Costume Construction I as well as hiring and supervising all student workers in the Costume Shop. As Costume Shop Foreman, she checks in daily with shop staff to ensure they have the labor support necessary to complete their work.

Sue holds an MFA in Costume Design from the George Washington University as well as a BA in French Literature from the University of Maryland. She has designed costumes for many professional theatres including Theatre J, Wooly Mammoth Theatre, Imagination Stage, and Olney Theatre. Since 2002, Sue has managed the Costume Shop for Wolf Trap Opera Company, a nationally recognized summer opera program for exceptional emerging artists.

Sue’s most satisfying role is preparing the next generation of theatre artists through teaching and mentoring technicians, designers and performers. She can happily say that this role began at home. All three of her children are working arts professionals.

How are you building the future of the arts?

Every day I am surrounded by the next generation of theatre artists. The most satisfying part of my job is learning through teaching.
