Experience the soulful, syncopated sounds of jazz in these two lively concerts featuring classic tunes performed by the four jazz combos coached by Gerry Kunkel, Tom Baldwin, Bill Dunn and Corey Hewitt. Attend both nights—each performance features a different program. Concert repertoire coming soon.

About Jazz Ensembles at UMD:

The School of Music’s jazz ensembles are composed of more than 100 students. The UMD Jazz Ensemble frequently performs at many off-campus events including the Maryland Music Educators Association annual conference and various local jazz festivals. Each year, the UMD Jazz Ensemble is one of three elite bands that performs at the Calvin Jones Big Band Jazz Festival—one of the most anticipated events on Washington, D.C.’s jazz calendar and frequently broadcast on the BET Network. Combos and big bands also perform a variety of outreach concerts at venues including the National Archives, public libraries, the National Building Museum, area schools and at campus events such as Maryland Day, galas and commencement activities.

WILLIAM DUNN is a trumpet instrumentalist and educator in the Virginia/D.C. area. After living and studying in Rome, Italy, he pursued a freelance career in New York City for 10 years. Equally at home in jazz and classical music, he has appeared with Bobby Sanabria, Dave Brubeck, Red Rodney, Wynton Marsalis, The Mingus Band, The Birdland Big Band, The Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York and the Fairfax Symphony. Dunn can be heard on Delos and Koch record labels, and enjoys an active career as a clinician and soloist. Dunn holds a bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University and a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music. Dunn is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in classical trumpet performance at the University of Maryland, College Park and serves as a graduate assistant in the jazz department. Dunn has served in the U.S. Military since 2003 and currently plays in the US Navy Concert Band in Washington, D.C.
 
TOM BALDWIN is a jazz bassist, educator, composer and arranger in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He has been one of the most in-demand bassists in the region for 30 years. Since winning second place in the Thelonious Monk International Bass competition, he has performed and recorded with numerous top jazz artists in venues such as Blues Alley, Wolftrap, The Kennedy Center, The Meyerhoff and Strathmore, and appears on over 50 CDs as a side man. Baldwin has taught at the University of Maryland, College Park since 1996 and currently teaches jazz bass students as well as directing small ensembles. In addition, he is a frequent faculty member at Maryland Summer Jazz camps and is a clinician/adjudicator for regional festivals and workshops.
