Mozart’s 1791 Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)—an opera familiar to many—is filled with nuances that audiences could easily overlook without exploring their context. UMD School of Music Maryland Opera Studio faculty Craig Kier and Amanda Consol are joined by UMD Professor of Voice Gran Wilson to explore how these 250-year-old themes still resonate today. Rituals, symbolism, gender and the journey toward "Enlightenment" lead individuals from vastly different worlds to come into their own as they discover their unique identities throughout the opera.
