A great play addresses questions that are relevant and resonant to the human condition. An effective theater experience should trigger passionate speculation and conversation. There are many moments of emotional resonance and relevance in SITI Company’s production of Euripides’ The Bacchae. Soaked in myth, paganism and cult rituals, the play is also perhaps one of the most powerful illustrations of arrogance in the history of theater.

The Bacchae addresses the two sides that lie dormant within all of us. One side is the power of the wilder, untamed forces – the goat rending, beer-binging passions – and the dangers of letting these proclivities see the light of day. The other side is our appetite for control, for certainty, dogmatism and rigidity that has the potential to take over our lives. SITI Company's production embodies these issues in a way that simultaneously questions current assumptions about gender, race and culture. Join Anne Bogart for a conversation with DC's Theater Alliance artistic director Raymond Caldwell as we explore these and other issues.

From toxic masculinity to cultural appropriation to multiculturalism, The Clarice’s 2019-20 visiting artists are complex, provocative and deeply sensitive. Arts Citizenship Talks (ACTnow) are opportunities for audiences to hear from these artists on activism around the issues reflected in their work. They are an invitation to act now!
