A riveting journey of influential American music led by Grammy-winning conductor David Alan Miller featuring pianist Kevin Cole, the world’s leading authority on Gershwin’s piano literature. Gershwin’s virtuosic and jazz-inspired Concerto in F is paired with landmarks of American repertoire by Joan Tower, John Harbison and Walter Piston. Tower’s Sequoia implements winds, brass and percussion to paint both the tall branching and the deep rooting of the giant redwood trees. John Harbison travels back to a Jazz Age speakeasy with his crisp Remembering Gatsby, a foxtrot for orchestra filled with swing, dance and drama. Rounding out the evening is Walter Piston’s soaring Symphony No. 5.

This concert continues NOI+F’s partnership with Naxos, classical music’s biggest label, in line with the festival’s firm commitment to recording American music. The only recording collaboration of its kind in the country, the partnership resulted in a “Best Orchestral Performance” Grammy nomination for 2018 album Ruggles, Stucky & Harbison: Orchestral Works.

Program:

Joan Tower: Sequoia
George Gershwin: Concerto in F
John Harbison: Remembering Gatsby - Foxtrot for Orchestra
Walter Piston: Symphony No. 5
