In the more than three decades since their inception, the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) has risen to prominence in international competitions and concert halls for their electrifying performances, ever-expanding repertoire and dedication to engagement with audiences, composers and emerging artists. With performances hailed as, “wickedly attentive” (The Gazette, Montreal) and “with a hint of rock ‘n roll energy” (LA Times), the Grammy-nominated quartet has thrilled listeners with rousing interpretations of music by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Haydn, Adams and Golijov. Residencies at renowned institutions such as Stanford University and Spoleto Festival USA along with collaborations with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony, Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic and Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony have reimagined the role of chamber music in the lives of concertgoers, students and young artists.

This performance unveils their creation and collaborative endeavor with composer Osvaldo Golijov. The new octet for strings is a generously-crafted work for the St. Lawrence String Quartet and four locally based string players, highlighting a once-in-a-career opportunity for exceptional student artists or orchestral leaders in communities across North America. The performance at The Clarice will feature members of the Thalea Quartet, the School of Music’s Fellowship String Quartet. As conceived by Golijov, this chamber music experiment will, "explore the dimensions opened by combining an organism with its own breathing and metabolism, like a string quartet... together with four individual players that come to orbit, interact and disrupt this organism.”

This event is part of the Visiting Artist Series. The Clarice's Visiting Artist Series features regional, national and international artists who visit the University of Maryland for performances and other activities. Beyond the stunning work these artists bring to the stage, they are also committed to extensive engagement that creates exciting connections with students and the community. During their time at UMD, St. Lawrence String Quartet will have engaged in:

  • Chamber music coachings with UMD School of Music students
