Program Notes:

Featuring the world premiere of Oracles by composition faculty member Mark Wilson, the concert will also include James Stephenson’s The Road Home with faculty member Chris Gekker on trumpet and Shuying Li’s The Last Hivemind, which was inspired by the TV series Black Mirror and explores the potentially disastrous repercussions of using artificial intelligence or “hive mind.”

Led by Michael Votta, Jr., the UMD Wind Orchestra (UMWO) is a leading voice among collegiate ensembles in premiering new works for winds. This season’s engaging performances will feature faculty soloists and world-premieres of new works and masterworks of the 20th and 21st centuries. UMWO has performed in side-by-side collaborations with major professional ensembles and has performed by invitation at international, national and regional conferences.

Program:
Shuying Li: The Last Hivemind
James Stephenson: The Road Home
Richard Strauss: Suite in B-flat Major, Op. 4
Bohuslav Martinu: Memorial to Lidice (arranged by Robert W. Rumbelow)
