Technical Coordinator

Position Summary

The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is building the future of the arts by educating, training and presenting the next generation of artists and creative innovators. Unique among performing arts centers, The Clarice breaks through traditional boundaries in art-making and audience development through creative-based partnerships that nurture and sustain artists and the creative radius of communities surrounding the University of Maryland. The Clarice’s artistic partners are the School of Music, School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies, the Artist Partner Program, Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, MilkBoy, and the DeVos Institute of Arts Management.

The Technical Coordinator plays a strong role in ensuring the highest standards related to the success of all productions. This involves project management, overseeing the daily operation of the technical and performance areas of The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center managed performance spaces. The Technical Coordinator provides guidance and instruction to a large part-time student workforce and trains student assistants to safely and effectively work as stage technicians while operating a venue or performance.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or related field plus one year experience; or 5 years equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of and working experience with sprung-floor constructed stage decks, soft goods, counterweight systems, fire curtains, truss, theatrical motorized systems, chain hoists and motors, fall protection systems, symphony concert shells, and theatrical staging equipment such as portable risers and dance floors
  • Extensive experience with rigging for performing arts (theatre, dance and music) events.
  • Strong leadership skills overseeing union, non-union, and student crews. Experience with training, scheduling, supervising and employee performance management.
  • Positive, approachable attitude; open mindedness and objectivity; and willingness to collaborate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with a diverse constituency and ability to work with people with varied skill levels.
  • Strong customer service skills and professional manner to successfully build and maintain positive customer relations and provide quality service.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to independently follow through to successful completion of projects.
  • Able to multi-task and distribute efforts appropriately among tasks, manage competing deadlines, handle frequent interruptions and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Able to quickly and easily adapt to changing situations and priorities in a calm and professional manner.
  • Able to work under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD.
  • Able to work long hours, overtime, nights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred

  • Completion of the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP), desired.
  • Appreciation for wide variety of performing arts including; dance, music and theatre.
  • Experience as a touring Master Carpenter.
  • Experience in a higher education setting and teaching environment

Scope of Responsibility

The Technical Coordinator provides guidance and instruction to a large part-time student workforce and trains student assistants to safely and effectively work as stage technicians while operating a venue or performance.

Essential Job Functions 

Stage Operations 

  • Coordinate and execute stage operations activities as assigned by the Technical Director so that they meet the specifications of the events at The Clarice by the mutually agreed upon deadlines
  • Assist in developing designs and drawings for all projects that will conform to various building and occupancy codes
  • Coordinate the planning and execution of the changeover/Load-in/Load-out process for events at Clarice performance spaces as needed
  • Oversee the inventories related to flexible seating systems and soft goods for all Clarice managed spaces
  • Oversee and maintain the backstage areas of the performance spaces used by The Clarice and its partnerships as assigned by the Technical Director. Keep these spaces clean and orderly
  • Establish a regular inventory of supplies and materials as needed and within established budgets
  • Ensure that production run crews have been provided with appropriate training to manipulate and move equipment safely and effectively during onstage rehearsals and performances
  • Supervise load-ins, strikes and technical/dress rehearsals
  • Supervise Stage Operations employees and maintain a safe and efficient environment. Provide support and mentoring in the education of student
  • Supervise professional overhires.    

Scenery and Rigging Coordination

  • Under the direction of the Technical Director, act as the lead coordinator for all rigging, staging, and scenery needs for the Artist Partner Program, Rentals, and other events and projects as assigned.
  • Evaluate the potential projects by looking at designs, technical riders, and other sources and provide estimates and recommendations to the Technical Director regarding the needs and concerns necessary for implementation.
  • Serve as onsite technical supervisor for events as assigned by Technical Director.
  • Provide drafting and technical support for additional projects as assigned by Technical Director.
  • Provide support to the Scenery, Paint, and Prop shops as needed and assigned by Technical Director

Health and Safety 

  • Coordinate training and inspections related to the safe operation of all backstage equipment and facilities.
  • Actively work to create and maintain a safe work environment and safety procedures for The Clarice by maintaining certifications and trainings as necessary pertaining to the work of The Clarice production department.
  • Act as a Safety Officer for the Production department as requested.

Instruction 

  • Serve as a laboratory instructor for The UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) and the UMD School of Music (SOM) when and if requested.
  • Provide faculty with the information they need to support their assessment of student work. 
  • Maintain and ensure that there is an inclusive environment for students to learn in. This includes actively creating opportunities for all students regardless of their physical abilities, age, sex, race, religion, and gender identity or expression.
  • Prepare and instruct students on current safety practices and standards when requested.
  • When requested by faculty, provide regular constructive feedback regarding the process and choices regarding a student’s classwork and project execution. Include faculty supervisor when feedback includes possible curricular adjustments.
  • Actively engage/train/mentor students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed and conveys an enthusiasm for their learning.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 100lbs 
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as appropriate 
  • Ability to work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, dust, and drafts.
