Scope of Responsibility:

The Director of Finance and Administration leads the management and direction of The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s financial and administrative functions. With direct oversight of the accounting/finance, information technology, and human resources of The Clarice, The Director of Finance and Administration partners with governing campus entities to ensure that the organization adheres to the policy, procedures, and processes as set forth by the University of Maryland and it’s adjoining foundations. The Director of Finance and Administration is a key strategic advisor to the Executive Office of The Clarice, as related to the organizational budget, business operations and the activation of human resources related initiatives. In addition to Clarice center operations, The Director works closely with the College of Arts and Humanities, Division of Finance and Administration, the University of Maryland College Park Foundation and University System of Maryland Foundation, to ensure that The Clarice’s financial and administrative standing is accurately reported as required.

Essential Job Functions


  • Provide strategic financial management of The Clarice’s approximate $7 M operating budget and $32M endowment portfolio
  • Work closely with the Executive Office and Clarice senior leadership on strategic financial planning and analysis
  • Produce ongoing fiscal reporting and analysis for all Clarice operating departments, along with providing recommendations for fiscal process improvement and workflow advancement
  • Manage and produce annual fiscal reporting as required by the various financial departments of the University (Budget Office, Comptroller), grant funders, and other third party constituents
  • Oversee financial management of University of Maryland, University of Maryland College Park Foundation, and University System of Maryland accounts, ensuring adherence to financial regulations
  • Maintain high quality financial account reconciliation, establishing internal controls for all Clarice financial transactions

  • Manage annual budgeting cycle, providing senior leadership with the templates, timelines and a framework to complete budgets in accordance with University deadlines
  • Recommend sound financial strategies for implementation, assessing organizational impact and risk
  • Oversee cash management and application for all Clarice operations, ensuring proper cash management procedures in conjunction with the University Bursar’s office
  • Identify and implement efficiencies in day to day financial management to continue to strengthen internal controls
  • Provide ongoing financial management training for Clarice staff and leadership
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis as requested by Executive Office or Clarice senior leadership
  • Serve as department approver of all expenditures and revenue applications


  • Provide leadership and direction for The Clarice’s Human Resources function that includes payroll, time management, position management (eTerp), compensation and classification (equity), and employee relations functions
  • Work closely with the Arts and Humanities Equity Officer and UHR to ensure adherence to University policy and state law as related to all personnel matters
  • Work closely with UHR and the Center for Leadership and Organizational Change (CLOC) to provide ongoing management and non-management training for Clarice staff
  • Create and oversee process for hiring staff, students, contingent workers, and affiliates to support the various departments of The Clarice
  • Oversee onboarding and offboarding of all Clarice staff
  • Create and manage standard operating procedures for annual performance appraisal cycle and Clarice position descriptions
  • Oversee all communication to Clarice staff as related to personnel matters
  • Serve as department approver for all personnel actions 


  • Provide leadership, motivation and direction to the Finance and Administration department
  • Directly supervise the Business Manager, Human Resources Coordinator and Administrative Coordinator
  • Serve as trusted advisor to Executive Office and senior leadership teams of The Clarice


  • Provide strategic oversight of office administration and information technology functions of The Clarice
  • Manage desktop support function for The Clarice; including maintenance of copy machines and office printers, software and hardware management, and workstation ordering and maintenance
  • Oversee management of Clarice information systems function, ensuring proper communication, training and management of all Clarice information systems
  • Oversee employee parking, building access, ongoing office maintenance and assignment and university key administration


  • Work closely with University Legal, and Risk Management offices to ensure that all Clarice
  • contracts, and memoranda of understanding are compliant with University and State regulations.
  • Review all Clarice contract templates to ensure compliance with University Legal, along with assessing and communicating areas of legal risk.
  • Review contracts with insurance implications to ensure necessary University insurance liability information is contained in each document
  • Advise leadership team of contract legal and liability implications as needed
  • Maintain record of all Clarice contract documents
  • Ensure that The Clarice senior leadership has proper signatory authority

List physical demands of position:

  • Normal Work Environment



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration; Finance, Accounting
  • 7-10 years of experience in Financial Management and oversight
  • Knowledge of endowment and grant account management and reconciliation
  • Excellent oral and written communication Skills
  • Intermediate/Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel


  • Minimum of 5 years of University of Maryland or University System of Maryland experience
  • Strong non-profit/university accounting background
  • Experience with University of Maryland operating systems; KFS (Kuali Financial System), eTerp Human Resource Management, PHR, Advancement
  • Experience with financial database management
  • Experience with Podio project management software
  • Experience working in the arts
