September 24, 2012 – College Park, MD – The SFJAZZ Collective, an all-star ensemble of leading jazz performers/composers, will debut The Music of Chick Corea and New Compositions on October 12 at 8 pm in the Clarice Smith Center’s Kay Theatre. This world premiere performance will feature eight new arrangements of Corea works as well as eight new compositions by Collective members, commissioned by SFJAZZ. Additionally, SFJAZZ Collective will be in residency for a week at the Center, rehearsing and preparing for the program.

About SFJAZZ Collective

The Collective is comprised of eight of the finest performers/composers in jazz today, each with an original artistic voice that meshes powerfully within the ensemble to create a blended musical vision. Launched in 2004 by SFJAZZ — the West Coast’s largest nonprofit jazz institution and the presenter of the annual San Francisco Jazz Festival — the Collective demonstrates that jazz has truly become an international language. Hailing from Puerto Rico, New York, Venezuela, Philadelphia, New Zealand, and Israel, the Collective's current lineup mirrors the explosion in jazz talent around the globe.

SFJAZZ Collective most recently appeared at the Clarice Smith Center during the 2010-2011 season in The Music of Horace Silver.

In Residence

The Collective will be teaching master classes for the School of Music (SOM) jazz students in partnership with noted performer and SOM Director of Jazz Studies, Chris Vadala.

“The innovative approach to repertoire this group takes is pioneering,” says Vadala. “It honors jazz’s recent history while championing the music’s up-to-the-minute directions.”

While here, SFJAZZ will also provide local DeMatha High School students with a close-up look at the life of a working musician. Students will attend the ensemble’s rehearsals at the Center to get a sense of their commitment to jazz as a profession and as an ever-relevant art form.
